That is why SERVPRO of StCloud is here to leave you some tips to prepare your business for the excessive amount of rain. It is better to get ahead of the rain, than behind it!

Plan An Evacuation Route

If the excess rain is to cause flooding it is important to have a safe route out of the building and on the roads to get one away from the event.

Create An Emergency Kit

Some items that one could include in this emergency kit are containers of clean water, non-perishable food, and first aid kit. Whatever you feel is necessary for your business.

Protect Important Information

All important documents should have backup copies - they should be placed in another area that would not be experiencing the damage.

Keep Building Ready

To keep a building ready, one must keep the gutters and storm drains clean to help minimize damage.

Big Picture of the Idea

Create a comprehensive emergency plan to help prepare for an excess amount of rain and the damage it can cause. This way it will help to ensure that minimal damage will be caused.

Roof Maintenance

Roof and says 'Roof Maintenance'. Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud for mold remediation service and flood water damage repair. We are available 24/7 and here to help!

Fall Season

To prolong the life of your roof and ensure water does not leak through, your home’s roof should be inspected twice a year. Once in late spring, and once during the fall. So do not prepare for Halloween just yet – make sure you do the following roof maintenance tasks first:

  • Trim Trees: Dead tree limbs can fall on your roof and cause damage. Trees that are leaning towards your house could also fall on your roof or allow squirrels and raccoons to pay your roof a visit. Twigs, leaves, and other debris can cause rotting, gutter blockage, termite invasion, and roof damage. If you want to avoid these problems, remove overhanging branches and ensure that trees are not leaning towards your home.
  • Check & Clean Gutters: One of the best ways to prepare for the cold season is to clean your gutters and ensure they are well-anchored. This allows rainwater and thawed snow to flow properly off your roofline, avoiding leaks and water damage to your home. Remove leaves and other debris from the gutters regularly throughout the fall. In addition to this, install gutter guards – these ward off any debris that would invade your gutters.
  • Inspect Roof for Damage:
    • Check the roof flashings – these cover gaps near vents and chimneys, and can be dislocated during a storm. Replace faulty flashing pieces.
    • If you have an asphalt roof, replace shingles that have bare spots, are warping, or are curling at the edges.
    • If you own a wooden shake roof, look for signs of warping. If at least 25 percent of your wood shingles are damaged, replace the roofing material.
    • If you have a metal roof, look for signs of pitting, corrosion or gapping seams as these can lead to leaks or underlay damage.
    • Get a professional roof inspection if you feel you are not up to the task yourself. Your roof might need adjustment and repairs.

Fire Damage

Fire damage is something not to take lightly. People call SERVPRO of St. Cloud frequently to ask for advice on how to clean after a fire. Here are four of the best tips we give people who ask about fire damage restoration.

Consider whether you want to try these ideas on your own or whether you would be better off hiring highly trained restoration specialists who will guarantee their work.

1. Remove Smoke Damage

With any fire you will have a degree of smoke damage to your walls, wall paper and paint. If the smoke damage is not too serious, you should be able to scrub it clean with detergents and bleach. Soot from smoke damage is greasy, so always try to dust as much of it off from a surface before trying to scrub the surface clean.

2. Get Rid of Mold & Mildew

When the fire is gone, mold and mildew enter into houses as a result of the water used to extinguish the fire. SERVPRO of St. Cloud highly recommends you hire fire damage restoration professionals to deal with mold and mildew. It is difficult for a nonprofessional to know for certain if he has cleaned up all the areas affected by the mold and mildew.

3. Replace Carpets. Clean And Dry Your Floors

The floors and carpets end up absorbing the worst of the damage from all the water used to put out a fire. Depending on the severity SERVPRO of St. Cloud recommends that you pull up any carpets that have water damage and replace them.

Keep in mind that water can seep underneath vinyl flooring and into the cracks in hardwood. This needs to be addressed to prevent future issues.

4. Scrub, Soak & Cleaning Dishes

Dishes are also important items to clean thoroughly after a fire because they will be in contact with your food. Scrub all dishes, let them soak in a solution of bleach and water (2 tablespoons of bleach per gallon) for at least 20 minutes and scrub some more for safety. Some items may need to be thrown out.

Central Minnesota

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of St. Cloud will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud - Commercial Damages/Losses

You can never predict how water damage is going to strike your business regardless of if it’s from a plumbing leak, a storm, roof damage or any other catastrophic event. It can leak into walls, ceilings, floors, furnishings and other areas of the facility. Not only can the water damage your contents, but also the building itself. The longer it’s left the more damage that can happen. Understanding how important it is to get these repairs done can literally save the property. Disaster can strike at any time, it usually strikes when it’s least expected. Using our emergency helpline, you can ensure that your facility is protected by our highly qualified and trained team. SERVPRO of St. Cloud can be at your property within hours.

Understanding Water Damage Characteristics

It doesn’t matter what caused the water damage. We can determine the cause and immediately begin working on your facility and the contents. After we address the root cause of the water damage issue, we will begin to remove and salvage anything that can be salvaged. Then, we begin to make the emergency repairs. We work closely with your insurance company and work to get your company back in business as quickly as possible.

If your property has any water damage, it’s important to give us a call right away. Standing water can quickly spread and ruin your entire building. In no time at all your carpet, upholstery, records and books can all be damaged or destroyed. Furnishings made of wood may swell and parts may even disintegrate. Metal surfaces may be damaged as well. Standing water must be removed as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.

There are many potential long-term effects of water damage. These include bacteria and molds as well as the unpleasant odor. There are also more allergens. Left alone, more damage may occur as wood warps and splits and dries out. Windows and doors may not close properly. It’s vital to address the issues in the first few days to help reduce the amount of permanent damage and reduce restoration costs.

In many cases, the damage may not be obvious. It might only be noticeable by the smell and mold growth. Small leaks may cause a lot of potential damage if they’re not quickly dealt with.

Dealing With The Water

In dealing with the water, you’ll have to start with the flood damage to the property and contents. Using a high-volume desiccant and dehumidifiers, the dry air is forced into the damp areas and minimizes the risk of more damages. Prior to this process, the source of the water intrusion is identified and controlled. The level of contamination must first be controlled and then repairs begun. In removing the standing water, the mold growth is controlled and stopped. As the water begins to evaporate the humidity level is lowered. It’s vital to completely remove all of the water and humidity. This can prevent further damage to the facility.

Document And Content Recovery

We offer full services and understand how vital it is to recover the contents of your business. All content that is salvageable will be removed and restored in a secure facility. These can be professionally packed and stored with a specific barcode prior to returning it to your fully restored facility. Upon completion, our dedicated staff will ensure that everything is placed back into your facility as it should be. Every care is taken to ensure that all electronic media, hard disks, drives and optical disks are recovered as fully as possible. This can help to keep things running. Water damage can occur in a commercial establishment due to several causes. Many times, this is occurring when it is least expected. Although, obvious damages can be evident on items and other properties like water-soaked carpet and furniture, property owners should be aware that there are other hazards that would put the inhabitants of a property at risk.

This is exactly why water damage restoration is so important. Water damage restoration is always beneficial whenever there has been water damage to your property. Calling in a team of experts ensures that the job to restore the damaged is done quickly and right. Some people might think that water damage restoration is a DIY job. However, if you do not do it right, you might put your property at risk.

As professionals, we are well equipped in handling situations such as these. We use personal protective equipment such as protective eye wear, suits, gloves, boots, and respirators with an N-95 filter. These things are important because the mold can become airborne while it is being removed.

Structural Risks Associated with Water Damage

When the property is exposed or soaked in water for a prolonged period, it can cause certain negative effects and subsequent damages to the structure. These effects include the following:

- Direct damage to the structural materials can result in structural instability. This includes weakening of the wall boards, weakening of the ground earth integrity, twisting, and tilting of the support columns, termite damage and more.

- Malfunctions in the electrical system can cause short circuits leading to shock or fires. Water can also cause considerable damage to electronics, electrical appliances, and other components.

- Prolonged exposure to water can cause corrosion to gas pipes, which eventually may result in leaks. Gas leaks can cause gas poisoning or even fires.

- Damage from water to possessions and other parts of the house including damage to items, peeling of paints, stains on furnishings and textiles, and damaged documents like books, photographs, and parchments.

When these damages continue unabated, it will create further damage to other structural components like metals, wood and even masonry. These damages can become very evident and will eventually lead to a significant decrease in the property/market value.

Effective steps are needed to tackle these structural hazards which come after water damage. It is better to prevent a problem than to solve it.

  1. Cleaning and disinfecting: Restorable items require cleaning and sanitizing. A variety of cleaning products and techniques are used to accomplish this as appropriate. This process includes odor removal using foggers and industrial-strength air scrubbers.
  1. Restoration: Getting things back to normal is the final step in the process. This can involve small repairs, drywall replacement, new carpet installation, painting and more. Major construction may sometimes also be required.

Every homeowner fears mold, it destroys home value and can wreak havoc on your health and pocketbook, but did you know there are ways to mold-proof your home. Here are some reasons you should look into mold-proofing.

1. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Once mold gets a strong hold in your home it can be tricky to remove. Mold remediation can get expensive and the longer a mold problem lingers the more difficult and costly it is to get rid of. Mold proofing experts will let you know where your potential problems are so you can monitor and help you develop a solid plan of action creating a home environment difficult for mold to gain a stronghold.

 2. Protect Your Home’s Value

For property owners, a big reason to prevent mold is to maintain property values. If you wait until mold shows up, the value of your property can take a hit. Studies show the vast majority of the general market is resistant to buying a property with a previous mold history, there have been reports of property deprecations of up to 60% if a property has a history of mold. Preventing mold before it starts is the best way to keep your home value up.

 3. Protect your health

Mold grows where it is dark and damp, basically in places usually hidden. Once a mold situation becomes apparent it means there has been a mold problem for quite some time before.  In this time the mold can make you and your family sick, see our article on Mold Sickness. Protect your family’s health with mold prevention.

If you have any mold related concerns, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400 today!

Tips To Prepare Your Business For A Flood

Rain showers have been a very popular topic the last month in Minnesota! As we have all been experiencing heavy rain falls at least once a week.

To keep a building ready one must keep the gutters and storm drains clean to help minimize damage.

Big Picture of the Idea

Create a comprehensive emergency plan to help prepare for an excess amount of rain and the damage it can cause. This way it will help to ensure that minimal damage will be caused.

All matters mentioned above are to help, but have no guarantees.

If you are to experience a water damage or loss to your building, call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400! We will arrive as quick as possible to begin the process!

Septic Systems

4/18/2022 (Permalink)

Picture of a phone and says 'Call Us Today!'/ If your septic system backups, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud to help. We are open 24/7 and can get your home back to normal.

Why Do They Backup?

There are a number of reasons why these backups occur. One of the most common causes for this issue is the over usage in a small amount of time.

For instance, if you have guests that come over and stay for a week or two, it can lead to the cause of this occurring. The septic system is not designed for a heavy use environment and as a result, this will often lead to a drain field backing up and needing service to correct the problem.

There are other factors that will play a role in the failure of a drain field. One of the other most common of these is that of the wrong items being flushed down the toilet or placed in the garbage disposal.

This can be a difficult thing for a person that is not accustomed to a septic system to adjust to. Unlike a sewer system that almost anything can be flushed, you have a list of items that are never to be flushed down the system. These accumulate and clog up the system.

Depending on the level of the problem, you might be forced to replace the entire system to get it flowing again.

There are many other areas of concern that have to be explored if the previous ones have not been found to be the problem. One of these is the failure of the pipes that are part of the drain field system. This is often one of the overlooked issues that cause a backup in the drain field to occur.

These are just a few of the things that a homeowner needs to be on the outlook for when it is a matter of keeping their drain fields from backing up.

If your septic system backups, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud to help. We are open 24/7 and can get your home back to normal.

Messy Situations

Minnesota weather can be unpredictable when it comes to the winter temperatures and snow falls.

That is why it is important to stay educated when the winter weather can be so unpredictable. The changes in the weather can cause damages to residential and commercial properties. It can cause pipes to expand and burst. The expanding and bursting of a pipe in a residential or commercial property can cause significant flooding if one is not prepared.

Prepare:

To prepare for this type of weather, one should make sure to inspect their pipes. If a pipe needs replacing, be sure to do this before the cold weather hits.

Prevent:

To prevent large water losses and damage, tag your main water shut off. One should tag their main water shut off to help everyone in the home know where to shut off the water if a pipe is to burst. Hopefully by doing this, one will be able to shut off their water immediately minimizing the loss or damage.

Take Action:

If the unpredictable winter over hauls all of your preparing and preventing, take action by calling SERVPRO of St. Cloud immediately and we will be there to assist you. We area available 24/7 to ensure that one can be helped at any hour that they need.

Commercial Buildings - Mold

Commercial building with flood cuts Mold issues? Reach us at (320) 248-5400!

Understanding Mold

Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur, particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling moisture indoors.

Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on.

Due to mold requiring water to grow, it is important to prevent moisture problems in buildings. Moisture problems can have many causes, including uncontrolled humidity. Some moisture problems in buildings have been linked to changes in building construction practices during the 1970s, 80s and 90s. Some of these changes have resulted in buildings that are tightly sealed, but may lack adequate ventilation, potentially leading to moisture buildup. Building materials, such as drywall, may not allow moisture to escape easily. Moisture problems may include:

  • Roof leaks
  • Landscaping or gutters that direct water into or under the building
  • Unvented combustion appliances
  • Delayed maintenance or insufficient maintenance are also associated with moisture problems in schools and large buildings

Should you believe that your school or company may have a mold or water damage issues, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud. We are available 24/7 at (320) 248-5400! We are always here to help!

Preventing Ice Dams

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow (water) from draining off the roof. Water back ups behind the dam which can cause leaking into a home. When this happens it causes damage to walls, ceilings, insulation, and other areas.

Stop Ice Dams With A Cold Roof

The key to preventing the ice dams from occurring is to keep one's attic and roof cold. This is the key to preventing it because when it is warmer in spots on the roof it will cause the snow to melt. The melting snow then runs off the edge of the house which is still at freezing temperatures causing the icicles to form. Measures to help keep one's roof colder are to close the attic bypasses, measure the attic insulation level, and add roof and soffit vents.

1. Close the attic bypasses

The average home loses all of heats through the ceiling into the attic. One can prevent this by plugging the leaks using foam.

2. Measure the attic insulation level

Building codes require about 12 to 14 inches of fiberglass and cellulose. One should be adding more if there is less than 8 inches, and have had ice dam issues in the past.

3. Add roof and soffit vents

The minimum ventilation area should be about 1 square foot of vent per 300 square foot of ceiling area. One can never have too much ventilation.

Taking these precautions unfortunately cannot guarantee that the ice dams will not form, but taking these steps will help prevent it.

Essential Things To Do Before Leaving For Vacation

It is that time of the year when everyone wants to escape the cold, and head to warmer weather. You have booked the trip, found the must-see attractions, and charged the electronics! It is time to head to the airport.

But before you leave, make sure your house is ready for you to leave! In order to ensure that your house is going to be the way you left it when you return follow these easy tips!

Checklist:

1. Turn off your main water supply

One should turn this off to avoid water damage if a leak is to occur while on vacation.

2. Unplug electronics

Unplugging the electronics that will not be in use while you are gone will save you money on your electricity bill - will also help prevent an electrical fire.

3. Adjust your thermostat

Cooler Climate: Turn it down between 50 - 60 degrees F

Warmer Climate: Turn it up 5 degrees F higher than normal

4. Pour baking soda down your drains and toilets

By pouring this it will help with clear clogs and keep a fresh smell.

5. Check up on your insurance

Knowing what your insurance policies are will save you the headache when you get home if something does occur.

Once your checklist is all checked off, head out and enjoy that warmer weather on vacation!

All of these are tips that can help prevent matters from occurring, but are not a guarantee.

SERVPRO of St. Cloud

Everyone always seems to have great advice about what you should do if you experience fire damage – call your insurance company, secure the property, call a restoration team, and so forth. Something they do not often point out is the many things you want to be sure NOT to do.

Here are a few of those things you should know about if you are dealing with fire damage at your home:

  • Do not try to keep any food items. Including canned goods, which were inside the house during the fire. High heat can render them dangerous to consume. They should be thrown out and in some cases, you can itemize the cost to replace them as part of your insurance claim.
  • Do not deal with fire ash and residue on your own. If you handled the wrong way it could damage walls, ceilings, and other surfaces. It could also cause respiratory distress and damage if you breathe it in.
  • If there was heavy smoke, do not try to reuse carpeting or upholstered furniture. They will need to be replaced due to the chance of it causing respiratory problems in the future.
  • Do not turn on any electrical appliances. This includes computers, which were in a smoke-filled room before they have been checked out and professionally cleaned. There may ash and debris inside the components, and if turned on could cause more damage.
  • Do not enter the home until you have been told it is safe to do so. If you are not given that clearance due to structural integrity concerns, do not go in.

At SERVPRO of St. Cloud, we want you to be safe after your home experiences fire damage. We have the expertise to handle everything for you and get your home restored while not putting you in danger. We can work with your insurance company to make your fire damage restoration less stressful for you.

Each fire is different and every home or business requires its own specific approach, but the following is the general process we follow in a typical fire damage restoration situation:

  1. Emergency response. When you make your call to us, the restoration process begins. Our customer service representative will ask the right questions so that we can respond quickly and bring along the right resources and equipment.
  1. Inspection and assessment. We inspect the impacted area and adjoining rooms to find out the extent of the soot, smoke and other fire damage, then we can develop our plan of action.
  1. Securing the structure. Preventing further damage is essential, so we take immediate action to board up broken windows, shore up damaged walls and put tarps over damaged sections of the roof.
  1. Water removal. When water damage is present, we immediately start water removal. Dehumidifiers and air movers are used to get all the water from your home and complete the drying process.
  1. Surface soot and smoke removal. Using special equipment and time-tested techniques, we get rid of soot and smoke from the ceiling, all walls and other hard surfaces.
  1. Cleaning and disinfecting. Restorable items require cleaning and sanitizing. A variety of cleaning products and techniques are used to accomplish this as appropriate. This process includes odor removal using foggers and industrial-strength air scrubbers.
  1. Restoration. Getting things back to normal is the final step in the process. This can involve small repairs, drywall replacement, new carpet installation, painting and more. Major construction may sometimes also be required.

What Not To Do

Do Not Let Snow & Icicles Ruin Your Home

Now that old man winter is here to stay, it is time to think of the snow buildup that may be happening on your roof top. While roofs covered in fresh snow can make a pretty wintery scene, it can also do much damage under the blanket of snow and into your home. The snow starts to melt and then re-freezes which causes more stress to the roof of your home. As the ice slowly melts over time, water seeps beneath shingles and under the tar paper. Eventually it will also seep into the plywood beneath, causing damage to your roof, fascia, and soffit.

Ice buildup in your gutters prevents the flow of melted snow to your down spouts for proper drainage. The stacked up ice and snow causes the run off to flow over the lip of your gutters and create long icicles.

Clearing the snow the first 3 to 4 feet of the roof after every snow fall with a roof rake will go a long way in helping to protect your home this winter from the formation of ice dams.

If you do have any water damage to the inside of your home or need assistance in properly removing the snow on your roof contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud. The crew at SERVPRO of St. Cloud is prepared to help in anyway possible.

Where Does Mold Come From?

4. Make sure all HVAC ducts and systems are free of moisture.

5. Clean HVAC system coils and drip pans regularly.

6. Know the location of HVAC air intakes - trying to keep away from where standing water is present.

All of these are tips & ideas to help prevent the growth of mold in commercial buildings, but cannot guarantee no growth of mold.

Tips to Keep in Mind:

  • You and your loved ones have weathered the storms and now it is time to survey the damage and move towards the next phase – clean up and fix up. You, of course, need to make it a point to work with a professional to help put the pieces back together, including helping assess the damage. This is important to do before you begin to clean up or pick through items that are salvageable because you do not want to put yourself in harm’s way.
  • Ensure you have the proper estimate and other details in place to take care of your homeowner’s insurance. Things can seem so hectic after you have survived any type of storm damage. The last thing you want is to miss out on something that is key to get your insurance to cover the damages and repairs. Missing out on something or, even worse, missing the deadline could mean you have to pay for your own repair costs out of your own pocket.

Parts of your home that could suffer damage and require repairs include:

  • Siding
  • Roofing
  • Fencing
  • Decks or Patios
  • Tree Removal

Damage can happen to the interior of your home if you have suffered more extensive damage. That is why it is important to make sure that you are working with highly trained professionals.

SERVPRO of St. Cloud specializes in all aspects of storm damage. As we provide mitigation services to dry out your home, another team of SERVPRO of St. Cloud can provide construction services and rebuild the areas that are damaged.

Minnesota Cold Temperatures - Water Damage

10/25/2021 (Permalink)

Ice and says 'Cold Temperatures Ahead'. Frozen pipes? Water damage? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Cold Weather Near

Cold weather is in Minnesotan’s near future. The extreme cold temperatures that we experience can cause disasters to occur in one’s home or business. Here is some helpful information to prevent this from happening to you!

Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the "strength" of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool, supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, or garages. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

During Cold Weather, Take Preventative Action

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
  • If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

If you are to have any water damage because of frozen pipes, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud for all your repairs! We will be faster to any disaster and make it "Like it never even happened."

Smoke, Soot & Fire Damage

Flames and says 'Smoke, Soot & Fire Damage'. Smoke, soot & fire damage? Reach us at (320) 248-5400!

Fire Damage

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

  • Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
  • Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
  • Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

What should you do if your office or home suffers a fire?

All too often, we do not have a plan if a disaster occurs until it happens. The trouble is that if you do not have a plan, it is hard to act quickly and methodically, and we tend to make decisions based on emotions rather than facts. So here are a few tips should you encounter a fire in your home:

The most important factor is that everyone gets out safe. Plan with your family or employees how to get out of a fire and where to meet.

The best scenario to reduce the amount of damage from a fire and/or soot, is to contact a restoration company as soon as possible to begin the cleanup work. If the local fire department responded to a fire, often there is water damage as well as soot or charred materials from the fire. SERVPRO of St. Cloud can dry out your home as well as eliminating the soot odor. We have specialized equipment including air scrubbers, fogging equipment, ozone chambers just to name a few. It is important to understand how the equipment along with the specialized cleaning chemicals can restore your house as to the conditions before your fire.

If you suffer a fire to your home or business, it can be a traumatic experience. Let the professional staff at SERVPRO of St. Cloud help you navigate this process with your insurance company.

Water, fire, & mold damages!

Many people think of a typical water loss occurring in their home. They do occur very often in homes, but businesses are just as often affected when it comes to water, fire, and mold damages. When it comes to business damages, most think it comes from huge weather-related catastrophes. That can hold true, but most times businesses are suffering damages from the same sources as a home.

Some examples of how a water loss can occur are:

  1. Appliance Malfunction
  2. Sprinkler Lines
  3. Sewer Backup
  4. Storm Related

That is why whether it is your home or business, you need to be actively looking for water, fire, or mold damages before a little issue can become larger.

Microscopic mold spores can naturally occur both indoor and outdoor. Due to this, it makes it exceedingly difficult to remove all mold from a residential home or commercial business building. However, when mold remediation is conducted it reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold Facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere – indoor & outdoor
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air
  • Mold can enter your home through windows/doors, clothing, pets, etc.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture
  • Mold colonies can produce allergens & irritants
  • Mold can produce a strong & musty odor
  • Mold growth can be supported by higher-than-normal indoor humidity

If your residential home or commercial business building is experiencing any mold issues, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud. Our crew will come out to inspect and assess the property with the appropriate training and specialized equipment.

Spring is here! That means that the new leaves and flowers will begin to grow, the temperatures and daylight hours will begin to increase as the days get longer. It also means that the left-over ice and snow will begin to melt.

With the sudden change in increasing temperatures, one needs to be on the look out for flooding. There is a larger chance of flooding now due to the sudden change. The sudden change from freezing temperatures to increasingly warm causes freshet flooding. Freshet flooding is known as a large amount of flooding caused by rapid snow melt that has no where to go due to the ground still being frozen. Therefore, one should always be checking the lower levels of their house to make sure that flooding is not occurring.

One can help prevent the flooding by doing a few things:

1. Clean and maintain gutters and downspouts

2. Properly landscape your yard

3. Inspect and repair foundation cracks

4. Practice proper sump pump maintenance

5. Inspect sewers and clean septic systems

6. Install window well covers

If the prevention steps are not effective, here are steps to take after the flooding:

1. Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400 - Who will perform all the necessary steps!

2. Remove excess water

3. Dry it out

4. Scrub flooring

5. Examine and clear gutters, downspouts, and drains

6. Freeze your assets

All of the steps mentioned above are to help prevent matters from occurring but are not a guarantee.

Frozen and broken water pipes are not thought of as a catastrophe or anywhere near the same scale as a natural disaster. However, the damage from water is the most prevalent and least recognized catastrophe. In fact, frozen and broken water pipes rank No. 2 only behind hurricanes in terms of both the number of homes damaged and the amount of insurance claim costs in the U.S. In most cases, pipes break during freezing weather.

As the temperatures fall the water expands and causes localized pressure. When the pressure becomes too great, a break occurs. This may create a pinhole leak, hairline break, or large crack.

Damage from frozen and broken water pipes can be a homeowner's nightmare. When a pipe bursts, water gushes from the pipe like a fire hydrant turning a basement into a lake within a few minutes. Water from frozen and broken pipes causes the most damage while people are away from home or while they're on vacation and their home is vacant.

Make sure you turn off the water before you leave so you can return to a safe and clean home!

Says 'SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan App' with a picture of an iPhone. Should your business like to have an ERP on your property, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Part of the success of any business is its ability to run smoothly on a daily operation. Unfortunately, few things can sabotage a business for a lengthy amount of time like water or flood damage. The initial damage is bad enough, but the long term effects can end up costing businesses money.

Consequently, it becomes important for businesses and their owners to be properly prepared for disasters such as water or fire damage. Statistics show that the faster a company responds to a disaster, the less amount of consequences it has to their business. Both socially and financially.

roper preparation starts with knowing where the problems are most likely to occur. This can include knowing where the gas and water supply lines are that service the building. In addition, it is important to know how to cut off the water supply at the source to prevent additional damage. SERVPRO has identified top key factors that help in times of a disaster.

Therefore, we provide a service to all commercial accounts in our area. This free service is called an Emergency Response Plan or ERP. Our marketing team is able to identify a potential disaster and help make a plan prior to something happening.  That way if the worst scenario every happens, you have already thought of steps to help alleviate the problems.

For example, we will find your gas and water valves and tag them for you. That way you know where to turn the source off. In addition, we will meet with you to find your important contact information. Some of the information we will gather is your insurance provider, key HR personnel, and decision makers for your company. We will also provide your local fire/police/hospital information in time of need.

Other topics that will be addressed is your electric panel, elevator access, and where you would like emergency vehicles to park.

This information will be compiled and given to you, both on paper and electronically, to disperse to your staff.

ERP's are helpful, thought provoking and also free!

Should your business like to have an ERP on your property, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400. We would love to meet with you to discuss your water, fire, or mold damage needs!

Frigid Weather Conditions

SERVPRO of St. Cloud is here to help when a disaster strikes. We are also here to help you prevent disaster from striking. With all of the frigid cold temperatures occurring everyone needs to be taking the appropriate steps to prevent this.

Any type of water line can freeze when it goes below 32 degrees. This occurs when the water inside the pipe freezes, the ice causes an increase in pressure, and when the pressure gets to high it bursts.

Steps to prevent this:

  • Assess Conditions
  • Adjust Habits
  • Add Insulation

Assess Conditions

One of the most important prevention tips is to make sure that your pipes are in optimal condition. This can be done by having a plumber inspect your pipes and replacing older pipes, if instructed. It is known that PEX tubing is more flexible than copper so it is less likely to freeze and burst.

Adjust Habits

People leave for vacation all of the time throughout the cold season. If you are to leave your home make sure to keep it at least above 60 degrees. Some other habits to practice are run your ceiling fans in reverse, keep garage doors shut, close outdoor vents, keep interior doors open, and disconnect all outdoor hoses.

Add Insulation

Some areas in a home are not temperature controlled, that is why it is smart to add insulation to these areas. These areas can be the attic, basement, and crawl space.

If the cold overhauls the prevention steps, call SERVPRO of St. Cloud to help at (320) 248-5400! We are available 24/7!

Ice dams on the side of the roof. Ice dam damages or issues? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Ice Dams Can Cause Serious Issues

Don't let the pretty look of a winter scene fool you! The icicles coming off of the house with snow around the bushes of the house is a beautiful site. However, this beautiful site can also turn into a costly disaster.

Ice dams form when warmer air melts snow on the roof into water that is dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can back flow under the roof’s shingles and into the structures interior areas.

There are several common locations for ice dams to appear.

Look for them in the following areas:

1. The edge of your roof.

2. The gutter - remember, ice dams as little as one inch thick can cause big problems.

3. Behind the gutter on the fascia.

4. Through the soffit vents or through the soffit itself.

5. On the siding or exterior wall surface.

6. Inside the home.  Look for areas on the ceiling, windows, or door frames where the leaked in.

If you see water damage to your ceiling areas, often times in the deep cold spells, it can be a result of an ice dam.

If this does occur, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud to help. We can have our trained service team come out and access the situation.

We are able to dry out the interior of your home and repair other damages that may have been caused as a result of it.

Winter Weather Damages? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Winter weather has slowly been returning to Minnesota this winter season. We may see one of the coldest and snowiest winters in many years past, and we may not. We never know what the Minnesota weather is going to do.

A large concern during this time of the year is frozen water in pipes. Frozen water in pipes can cause water pressure buildup between the ice blockage and the closed faucet at the end of a pipe. This pressure can lead to pipes bursting at their weakest point.

To keep water in the pipes from freezing, take these following precautions:

  • Fit exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping to slow the heat transfer.
  • Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations near water pipe with caulking.
  • Keep cabinet doors open during cold spells to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
  • Keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets connected to pipes that run through any unheated or unprotected space.
  • Drain the water system especially if your house will be unattended during cold periods.

Taking these precautions unfortunately cannot guarantee that the pipes in the house will not freeze over, but taking these steps will help prevent it.

Should you suffer any damage from a frozen pipe, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud 24 hours a day at (320) 248-5400!

Statistics show that approximately 250,000 families have their homes damaged and their lives disrupted each winter. This is all because of water damage which stems from frozen pipes. Recovering from the damages is not as simple as calling a plumber. Damages can occur rapidly as a small crack in a pipe can spew up to 250 gallons of water a day.

Consequently, damages can be found throughout the house and can affect the ceilings, walls, and floors. By taking a few precautions, you can avoid the mess, money and frustration that this process can cause.

Before the cold hits:

Insulate pipes in your home's crawl spaces and attic. These areas are most susceptible to freezing. Don't forget that the more insulation you use, the less chance your pipes will freeze.

Seal leaks that allow cold air inside near where pipes are located. Look for any air leaks around electrical wiring, dryer vents and pipes. Properly use caulk or insulation to keep the cold out and the heat in.

Disconnect water and garden hoses and.

If your pipes freeze:

Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud!

For us Minnesotan's, we live where temperatures regularly dip well below freezing. Due to this, we need to prepare ourselves from the damage that can result from frozen pipes. A couple of practical things that you can do is as follows:

Protect Pipes Before a Freeze

  • Be sure to insulate all accessible pipes well before a cold snap. If you’re not sure what type of insulation to use, ask.
  • Apply pipe insulation to water pipes in unheated areas of your home, such as the garage, or in areas where pipes are near exterior walls, such as under kitchen or bathroom sinks.

How to Check for Frozen Pipes (& Thaw Them)

To check on your pipes, go turn on each faucet (both hot and cold). If there’s only a trickle of water or, even worse, there’s no water coming out at all, then you should suspect a frozen pipe. The source of the freeze is most likely near an exterior wall or where the main water supply enters your home. Do this until the pipe heats up and there is a steady flow of water.

When winter weather gets more extreme, so do the consequences of not preparing for the worst. Small issues like an overhanging tree can turn into a tree in the living room after a cold-snap and strong winds. Pipes can burst in winter, leaving you without hot water, or causing damaging flooding, which can be incredibly dangerous in cold weather. Regardless what kinds of catastrophes you face, a disaster restoration plan are something that no homeowner should be without. Here are some of the risks that you could encounter and ways to cope effectively.

Ice and Snow
Ice storms don’t just cause water to freeze uncomfortably close to your home. While these events can indeed result in the formation of ice dams that tear roof shingles apart or make gutters fall, they can also impact the trees and power lines around your property. When these features collapse, the aftermath may be even more catastrophic.

In some cases, snow buildup itself damages homes. This is especially concerning with older properties that may not be quite as structurally sound as they once were. Heavy snow that causes your roof plane to bend or warp can create weaknesses that worsen with every passing season. No matter how minor the problem seems now, failing to take immediate action is almost certain to cost you down the line.

What to do?

In winter, rapid emergency restoration needs to be one of your primary concerns.  SERVPRO of St. Cloud is a local company that has been in the construction business for over 20 years.  This expertise will be shown in the quality work that will be done in your home.  Unlike storm chasers, we are here to stay in our community.

When you are staring at the aftermath of an issue, the steps to move forward in order to have your commercial property restored can be mentally taxing. There are so many factors to consider. These factors can include cost, workplace disruptions, and plausible time frames.

SERVPRO of St. Cloud would like to work with customers on their commercial restoration services.

We believe these are a few key traits that you should look for in your commercial restoration services company:

  • Experience- Especially important in commercial restoration services, experience should be at the top of your list when searching for the right company. You want someone who can give you an accurate time frame and quote, making it easier for you to plan out your budget and plan to return to your property. Only an experienced commercial restoration services crew can do that. SERVPRO of St. Cloud has the capacity to work on small to large projects, as demonstrated after 9/11 when we responded to the Pentagon.
  • Variety of skills- Often one problem attracts others, and it will be extremely helpful if you have one company that can assist you with multiple problems rather than several companies attempting to clean up several problems. For example, a leaky pipe and resulting water damage might cause drywall problems and mold in addition to flooding. Rather than calling a plumber, drywall professional, and mold abatement crew - it is in your best interest to look for a single company that has expertise in all these areas. SERVPRO of St. Cloud can work with all issues and contractors.
  • Professionalism- If you would not feel comfortable around someone without a professional demeanor, why would you let them into your commercial property? Dealing with a disaster is tough; do not let an ill-mannered commercial restoration services company make it tougher.

The next time you have issues or damages to your property, let our commercial restoration services team assist you.

Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud to help with any issues or damages. Whether it entail mold, fire damage, biohazard cleanup, or water damage.

Toilet Overflow & Leaks

Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud to Help You!

In the perfect world, your toilet would never leak. Sadly, the world is not perfect, and toilets do leak. When a toilet does leak, it is not pretty. Toilet water damage can be a costly expense.

Sone thing that is worse is that one third of toilet catastrophes start with a clogged or overflowing toilet – something that can be easily avoided if proper toilet maintenance is performed.

What Do I Do If My Toilet Overflows?

  1. Adjust the float. If the toilet is overflowing not because of a blockage, then it could be that a simple float adjustment could save you from an overflow and toilet water damage. Lower or raise the float until the desired bowl fill level is reached.
  2. Do not flush again. If your toilet is clogged, avoid the temptation to keep flushing the toilet to see if the waste will go away.
  3. Try a plunger. If the toilet is clogged but not spilling water onto your bathroom floor, try dislodging the clog with a plunger.
  4. Turn off the water. If your toilet bowl is overflowing, then your first step should always be to turn off the water supply to your toilet. This knob is usually located on the wall near the base of the toilet, below the tank.
  5. Reach out to a professional plumber to fix the problem.
  6. Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400 to safely clean up any toilet water damage.

The short answer? Potentially. If your toilet overflows and contains any raw sewage or fecal matter, then you should not touch it without wearing proper protective clothing. Toilet water that has soaked into your carpets or flooring is considered a biohazard because it is full of microparticles that could quickly develop into mold or fungus if not properly sanitized.

Instead of trying to handle toilet water damage yourself, call SERVPRO of St. Cloud. Our crew has the proper sanitation chemicals to ensure that your house does not develop mold and that your hardwood floors are not ruined forever.

If you are to suffer water damage from a toilet overflow or other mishap, SERVPRO of St. Cloud would love the opportunity to help you!

When a commercial building is in good condition, property managers won't expect the slightest water leak in the ceiling to cause a major problem. However, an instantaneous pipe bursting can cause a catastrophic event due to flooding. Water damage can be a major issue and, if not properly handled, can lead to mold and other problems.

These are a few reasons to use SERVPRO of St. Cloud in Central Minnesota- including St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids, Foley, Sartell, and other surrounding cities- to clean, restore, and repair commercial buildings after a water or fire loss.

- Remove the water damage: To remedy the situation n a timely manner, it is important to hire a professional to repair the structure.  SERVPRO of St. Cloud is equipped with equipment that can dry your structure in a scientific and calculated way. We will place the appropriate equipment in your building so you will be back in business as quickly as possible.

- Prevent further damage: Water damage can cause an unpleasant odor; it also sinks into the walls and flooring causing discoloration and mold. Drying the area with excessive heat causes humidity to increase which leads to bacteria. To prevent this, commercial businesses must act quickly as possible by calling a emergency restoration company such as SERVPRO of St. Cloud.

SERVPRO of St. Cloud services include water damage restoration, mold remediation, storm restoration, fire damage repair, and bio-hazard cleanup.  We understand how important it is to respond to an emergency and help our customers in a difficult situation.

Fire Damage? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Smoke and soot are very invasive. It can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect while accurately assessing the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

There are two different types of smoke – wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of St. Cloud will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Additional information:

We have the equipment, expertise, and experience. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Is Bleach Strong Enough to Kill Mood?

Mold Issues? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Bleach does not eliminate mold growth.

A common misconception that we often hear when cleaning mold is that a bleach solution will take care of a mold problem. The truth is that in some cases, a bleach solution can only mask the problem and make it worse. Industry leaders have determined that bleach should not be used in mold remediation and is ineffective in mold removal.

Remember, bleach only affects surface mold  If the area that you are working on is the slightest bit pourous, then you should never assume that you have eliminated the infestation completely.

Some reminders why to contact a mold specialist:

  • A mold removal specialist will know what type of biocide will work best against the strain or stains of mold growing in your home.
  • A mold removal specialist will know what materials in your home can be cleaned and saved and which must be removed and replaced.
  • A mold removal specialist will have any special equipment needed to complete the mold removal job, including safety gear, respirator masks, vacuums with HEPA filters, and negative air machines.
  • A mold removal specialist will know how to handle mold safely and to prevent the spread of mold spores to other areas of your home.

If you suspect mold, contact our crew at SERVPRO of St. Cloud! We can be reached at (320) 248-5400!

Protect Your Home

Around this time of year Minnesota home and business owners can experience issues with the spring thaw. Even though we cannnot control the weather, owners can work on minimizing the risk of damages by taking some necessary steps.

How to Help Prevent Water Damages

No owner can prevent all damages from occurring, but you can take necessary steps that will help you to be prepared.

Basement Pumps: Install a sump pump or a sewer backflow value and keep a battery-operated backup in case of power failure. Consider installing a water alarm that warns when water is accumulating in your basement.

Basement Storage: Keep valuable items out of your basement. Removing any electronics or stored valuables from your basement prior to spring-thaw warnings.

Debris Removal: Remove debris from window wells, gutters and downspouts.

Doors & Windows: Check for any leaks around doors and windows.

Grading: Inspect the grading around your home and make any changes. Design the grading to encourage the water to flow away from your home.

Landscaping: Trim trees and bushes away from your home and do not store wood or compost piles nearby.

Roof: Keep your roof in good repair. Unless a tree falls on your roof during a storm, most insurers expect you to maintain your roof to prevent water leaks caused by snow melting or torrential downpours.

Protect your home and business while we watch our weather turn from winter to spring!

Crazy Minnesota Winter Weather

House with snow and ice hanging from the roof. Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400 with any damages this winter season!

Winter Weather Damages? Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

When the winter weather gets more extreme, so do the consequences of not preparing for the worst. Small issues like an overhanging tree can turn into a tree in the living room after a cold-snap and strong winds. Pipes can burst in winter which could leave you without hot water or fLood damages. Both which can be incredibly dangerous in cold weather. Regardless what kinds of damages you face, a disaster restoration plan is something that no homeowner should be without.

Below are some of the risks that you could encounter and ways to cope effectively.

Ice & Snow
Ice storms can lead to the formation of ice dams that tear roof shingles apart or make gutters fall. Also, they can have impact on the trees and power lines around your property. When these matters collapse, the aftermath may cause damages.

In some cases, snow buildup can damage homes. This can be very concerning with older properties that may not be quite as structurally sound as they once were. Heavy snow that causes your roof to bend or warp can create weaknesses. That is why one should take needed precautions to help prevent damage.

When it comes to the winter season, rapid emergency restoration needs to be one of your primary concerns.

Should you experience any disasters or damages, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400

Avoid Frozen Pipes

2/11/2020 (Permalink)

Ice dripping off a pipe and faucet. Call SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400!

Minnesota is full of crazy weather, especially during the winter time! Sometimes we experience the coldest weather that can cause damages. Some damages that can be caused in this time of year are frozen pipes from the cold water.

Water damage can be classified as a tragic event to those who experience it. The causes of water damage can range from a water pipe that burst to an extreme storm. When this occurs in your home, it is important to know what to do. Water spreads very fast and when gravity does what it is supposed to, it will pull water to the lowest point. Water will begin to puddle and soak into the material that it is set on. The longer the water remains there, the more damage that will occur. The effects that you will not be able to see may result in rotting of wood, metal materials rusting, and the growth of mold.

If you have any concerns of this in your home, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud for a free estimate. Our crew is available 24/7, and ready to help YOU.

Does Your St. Cloud Home Have A Mold Problem?

9/18/2018 (Permalink)

In St. Cloud, Sartell, Foley, or any other home in Central Minnesota, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

If You See Signs of Mold, Call Us Today – (320) 248-5400 or email at office@SERVPROstcloud.com

Understanding mold in your home. Let SERVPRO of St. Cloud help!

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

Mold found in the wall cavity at a home in St. Cloud, Mn. SERVPRO of St. Cloud provided remediation services.

SERVPRO of St. Cloud is contacted often regarding mold related questions.  There are many concerns about mold in your home or business and how that can affect your health.  To understand the impact of mold, here are ten things you should know about mold:

Potential health effects and symptoms associated with mold exposures include allergic reactions, asthma and other respiratory complaints.

  1. There is no practical way to eliminate all mold and mold spores in the indoor environment; the way to control indoor mold growth is to control moisture.
  2. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  3. Fix the source of the water problem or leak to prevent mold growth.
  4. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  5. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  6. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  7. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  8. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  9. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Should you think you have mold related concerns, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud for an assessment.  We can be reached at (320) 248-5400 or office@SERVPROstcloud.com

Conditions In St. Cloud Might Be Right For Mold

7/31/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of St. Cloud knows what to do if mold grows in your home.

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of St. Cloud to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (320)-248-5400.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud for mold remediation services.

Should you be concerned about mold in your bathroom, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud.  Mold grows in warm, moist areas and bathrooms are an ideal place to thrive.  Often times, many people take long showers or baths without proper ventilation causing elevated microbial growth.  Often times, mold is found in the corners of ceilings or walls in the bathroom.  Other areas that mold can be found is from a slow toilet leak.  Often times, those slow leaks go undetected causing water damage and microbial growth in the walls and flooring of the bathroom.

To prevent mold, look for water damage in the following areas:

Leaky pipes under the sink.

Use proper ventilation including using the bath fan when showering.

Keep all surfaces clean.

Make sure there are no leaky windows in the bathroom area.

Mold is an important issue when keeping your home clean.  Mold can cause damage, both financially and also to your health.  It is important to be observant to any elevated microbial growth in your home.

This is not wallpaper.... This is mold!

Often times, we receive phone calls from people saying that they think they have "black mold" but not really sure what that is.  So we will explain what black mold is and what to do if you believe it is in your home and business.  Black mold is the fungal species stachybotrys chartarum and has a distinctive appearance.  It is slimy and dark and stands out against the drywall or furniture that it is on.

Where does it grow?

Black mold can grow everywhere if the conditions are right.  One thing that mold needs is a damp environment, little light, and a food source.  Often times, we see mold settling on drywall, furniture, or carpets.

How to handle mold removal?

Should you believe you have mold, contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud.  We work with industrial hygienists who give pre-test along with post test about the mold.  They will determine the type of mold found in your home and a remediation plan to remove the mold in your home.

Due to health concerns, SERVPRO of St. Cloud contains the area where the mold is found so it does not spread.  Often times, specialized equipment is used, air scrubbers are placed, and appropriate chemicals applied.

Minor water leaks can cause havoc to your home!

5/25/2017 (Permalink)

This home in Foley, Mn had water damage and SERVPRO of St. Cloud was there to help!

Realtors say many homeowners are unaware of a hidden water leak — which can interfere with the sale of a home, or be a concern for a new home buyer. A cracked pipe, broken seal, leaking spigot. . . There are a number of ways that water can creep into places it is not meant to go. The long-term results are more visible, including mold, rot, blistered paint, or damaged flooring.

Minor water leak often lead to major repair bills. But it’s possible to avoid the worst water damage by catching the situation early. You would probably notice a sagging ceiling above the dining room table. But what about more subtle signs? Water damage doesn’t always turn up at the source. It follows the path of least resistance, and then makes an appearance in unlikely places. You have to follow your nose, use your detective skills, or just put two and two together.

One big clue is whether there’s been a past incident with water in the home. Too often, the visible signs of a leak are eliminated but dampness within the walls or the floors is not. A floor that seems spongy and softer than it should is an indication that all is not dry underfoot. Mildew on an inside wall should set off alarm bells, or at least an investigation.

Leaks are cumulative. Building materials can absorb a surprising amount of liquid at first, but eventually the damage spreads to a deeper level, undermining your home’s structure and foundation.

Today’s homes are all about tight envelopes and energy efficiency. We have bulked up on the insulation, sealed leaks and gaps, and worked to keep as much conditioned air as possible inside the building. This efficiency, however, sometimes overlooks the fact that buildings need air circulation. Poor air flow becomes a real problem when there is water trapped somewhere. Consequences may include:

  • Mold and mildew, and an unhealthy environment for the occupants
  • Permanent damage to wood, carpet, wallpaper, paint and furnishings
  • Drywall & insulation that needs to be removed and replaced
  • Contaminated ductwork and other systems

Should you have water damage, please contact SERVPRO of St. Cloud at (320) 248-5400.  We are always here to help 24/7.

This home in St. Cloud, Mn (56304) found mold during a remodel project.

Mold is a type of fungus. Mold spores are found in both the indoor and outdoor air, but they will only grow if they find the right conditions. Mold requires three simple elements to grow:

  1. Moderate temperatures

  2. Nutrients (food)

  3. Moisture

Mold can start to grow on interior building surfaces and furnishings if there is too much moisture. Eventually, the mold will damage the materials it is growing on and may cause health effects for occupants.

Mold and Your Health

Health effects from mold can vary greatly from person to person. Common symptoms can include coughing, runny nose, wheezing and sore throat. People with asthma or allergies may notice their symptoms worsen.

All molds are a potential health hazard

Many molds are capable of producing substances that can be harmful to your health. Molds can produce allergens and irritants that can cause illness. For this reason, all indoor mold growth should be removed promptly, regardless of the type of mold present.

Mold and water can show up in many places

  1. Leaking roofs and ice dams

  2. High humidity in bathrooms and kitchens

  3. Leaking pipes

  4. Flooding in basement

  5. Pooling water at foundation

  6. Condensation on windows and exterior walls

Should you suspect mold in your home or business, call SERVPRO of St. Cloud for consultation at (320) 248-5400.

Water damage to ceiling from ice dam.

A winter snow storm is coming just when we thought it was over!  This week's weather forecast calls for up to 10 inches of snow to parts of Minnesota.  With these extreme temperature changes, it causes snow to melt and then freeze.  This can cause ice dams on the roof of your home which potentially can turn into problems.  Water damage can be found on the ceilings of your home.

Let SERVPRO of St. Cloud help repair any water damage you may have by drying out your home.  Continue to look for ice dams and as always, we would love to help prevent any leaks before they occur.  Call us today for a free estimate.
